Me and My Cat in My Parent's Room
Me and My Cat in My Parent's Room
2024
Chalk pastel on 4 pieces of pastel board attached to cardboard constructed surface
20" x 18"
I've chosen every single paint color in our house after my parents began to slowly renovate their house, including their bedroom. It used to be this dark chocolate brown with blackout curtains that made it feel sort of like a cave you would go to in order to escape the world. But it is now the cats' favorite room, and every time I come home, I can expect to see them there.
My cat Caroline was already named the same name as my middle name, and she loves this room. There's not much to this piece in reality; it's another one of those kitsch works you make because you just want to do something fun that looks pretty and is about your cat. It's a very self-indulgent work, which I believe is necessary for the soul, especially making works about the little animals you love. I did want to get over my aversion to chalk pastels though (it's a texture thing), and I was pleasantly surprised that I got through this piece without much struggle.
