Linocut printed on paper with decorative tissue paper
12" x 5"
I've done countless self-portraits in all types of different media. I think there is something meaningful to say about that fact- it has something to do with my body dysmorphia and that I'm a woman and my image defines part of me. But sometimes I make a self-portrait because I am a young artist and that was the assignment. The reality of being an artist in school is that you aren't always in charge of deciding the meaning behind what you make. Sometimes it's already decided for you, or you aren't given anything at all. There's still your own influence on your work or the possibility of bending the rules as far as they'll go, but an assignment to make a self-portrait linocut will produce just that.
It's going to take up your time and attention and the best you can do is enjoy it and make something that is technically impressive. I do really like this linocut; it's probably one of my favorite self-portraits I've ever done. So I think my time was well spent despite the kitsch nature of the piece.
